Subject: Bill 144-24, Relating to Apiaries and beekeeping
I support allowing beekeepers to keep bees on property not exempt as agricultural. I live in
Laupahoehoe, and a few years ago I had 2 beehives, and I had a neighbor who decided to raise
roosters. It was very annoying to be woken by roosters at 4 am every morning.
Upon investigation I discovered that my neighborhood was zoned RS10, no livestock allowed, so his
roosters were illegal, but bees were considered livestock, so they were illegal also. If I wanted his
rooster removed, I had to get rid of my bees.
Roosters are raised in support of cock fighting, which is inhumane, illegal, and lowers the value of
surrounding properties. Bees are good for the environment. I'm glad to see that cock fighting is
likely going to be made a felony, because this will likely reduce the demand for roosters.
I no longer have my bees as I no longer have time to take care of them, but I feel that it should be
legal to keep at least some beehives on normal residential property.
