Aloha esteemed council members, $.
My name is Kawehi Young and I am writing to express my strong support for Resolution 470 r7Y4, _
which appropriates contingency relief funds to support the upcoming Hala Festival scheduled for
Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Maku`u Market on Hawaii Island.
This event seeks to address the need to protect and preserve hala forests, particularly those in
Lower Puna, which are facing impacts from invasive species and habitat loss due to growing
development. I believe that events like the Hala Festival serve as a platform to bring our island
community together to celebrate hala and its importance to Hawaiian culture and our natural
environment.
This festival provides an invaluable opportunity for attendees to learn about traditional hala
weaving techniques, cultivate a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of hala, and
engage in meaningful dialogue about the importance of preserving our natural resources for
future generations.
Furthermore, the Hala Festival serves as a catalyst for economic growth by providing local
artisans, cultural practitioners, small businesses, and organizations with a platform to showcase
their work and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our community. By supporting this event, we
not only celebrate our heritage but also invest in the sustainability and resilience of our local
economy.
I respectfully request that you allocate funds to support the Hala Festival, ensuring that this
valuable community event can continue to thrive and make a positive impact on the lives of
