Cherished for its many uses, hala is an integral part of Hawaiian culture and continues to be an important resource for weaving, leimaking, and other cultural practices. This event seeks to address the need to protect and preserve hala forests, which are facing. impacts from invasive species as well as habitat foss associated with increased development. I believe that events like the Hala Festival provide an opportunity for folks to nurture a deeper connection to place and to discover how they can play a part in protecting Hawai'i's cultural and natural resources. Furthermore, the Hala Festival serves as a catalyst for economic growth by providing artisans, cultural practitioners, small businesses, and community organizations with a platform to showcase their work to the community. I respectfully request that you allocate funds to support the Hala Festival, ensuring that this valuable community event can continue to thrive and make a positive impact on the lives of Hawai'i Island residents. Mahalo for your attention to this matter. Mahalo nui loa, Kawehi Young Community Engagement Liaison Big Island Invasive Species Committee COMIr,. WO.- V 11.1 Ref. TO:Pj Ref. Bate RR 7 2024
