Aloha Cindy Evans,
I'm writing in response to Bill 125 on Commercial Bike tours here in Kohala and our surrounding areas.
have personally had encounters on our Akoni Pule Hwy and the Kohala Mt Rd where these tours and
cyclists have taken up dangerously narrow road areas and have no regard for motorists.
have called the Police dept many times to report that they are riding 4 to 6 wide across the road on
Kohala Mt Rd and not moving over or in a single line to allow cars to pass. The Police dept said that if we
hit them it's our fault because they have as much rights on the roads as cars do. If that is so, then
shouldn't they have special licenses for this and obey the same road rules as a motorist?
Also on Akoni Pule Hwy, they ride on the road and not the sides and hold up traffic. I live on the main
highway as well and they often stop in front of our house and rest or re group and block our driveways.
Also the tour guides do not always stay w the groups, I've seen many people riding alone and struggling
while the rest of the group is way ahead.
I for one would not ever want to come around a turn on the Mt Rd and accidentally hit anyone. This Is
always my fear because you never know when they are on the roads and when you might encounter them
around a turn.
This Is a very concerning and dangerous activity, I don't know how the tours advertise these things but I
really wonder what they must say about the road conditions...
