REPORT OF THE <br /> LEGISLATIVE APPROVALS AND ACQUISITIONS COMMITTEE <br /> DATE: May 14, 2024 Re: Comm. No. 875/Res. No. 518-24 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 10:47 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions, to which was referred Resolution <br /> No. 518-24, reports as follows: <br /> Resolution No. 518-24, transmitted by Finance Director Diane Nakagawa, via Communication <br /> No. 875, dated April 26, 2024, authorizes the acquisition of private properties by eminent domain, <br /> being portions of Tax Map Keys: 1-4-001:002 and 1-4-001:003, situated at Kapoho, Puna, County and <br /> State of Hawai`i, for the reconstruction of lava inundated roads, County Job Number E-4523, <br /> specifically Pohoiki Road. <br /> Authorizes the Corporation Counsel to initiate proceedings in eminent domain for the taking, <br /> acquisition, and condemnation of private property for the purpose of widening Pohoiki Road to <br /> comply with current roadway standards. <br /> Deputy Corporation Counsel Sinclair Salas-Ferguson, Public Works Director Steve Pause and Public <br /> Works Engineering Chief Alan Keone Thompson, were available for questions. Mr. Pause stated that <br /> a contract was recently issued with Isemoto Contracting to begin construction and that this particular <br /> portion of work would be for the Pohoiki Road restoration. Mr. Pause also stated this is a <br /> condemnation for two properties, which are adjacent to Pohoiki Road and is necessary to complete the <br /> widening of the road.
