Subject: 5/16 Agenda - Support for Communication 756.2 Memo No.1
I am writing to support Communication 756.2 which will amend the County Budget to add $2.5M to a
South Hawaii Animal Control Facility.
District 6 covers South Hawaii, a good 1/3-1/2 of Hawaii Island. Since 1990, Hawaii County's population
has grown from about 120,000 to about 206,000 in 2022.
I live in the northwest part of the South Kona district in Captain Cook. In this part of the district, I'm' about
as close as anyone to the Kailua-Kona animal shelter. Without traffic, the 15 miles take about '/2 hour; with
traffic, about 45 minutes. On a good day it takes me about 2 to 21/2 hours to get to Hilo. For those
residents farther south, it takes much longer to get to Kona especially if one of the frequent accidents
between MM 90 and MM 100 occur (and if there's a road closure in that area, that's a totally different
story).
South Hawaii probably has more domestic animals than people - it's still relatively rural. For that reason
alone, it needs an animal control facility that is close to its human residents to be able to better service the
residents and animals in its area.
