A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO HAWAIʻI ENVIRONMENTAL
RESTORATION TO SUPPORT ITS EFFORTS ON RESTORING AND PRESERVING THE KEAUʻOHANA STATE FOREST RESERVE.
WHEREAS, Hawaiʻi Environmental Restoration (HER) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help restore the natural integrity of Hawaiʻi’s environment; and
WHEREAS, HER’s primary project is to focus on the restoration and preservation of Keauʻohana State Forest Reserve in the Puna District, the largest and most intact lowland rainforest
remaining below 1,000 feet in the State of Hawaiʻi; and
WHEREAS, the ecosystems of the Hawaiian Islands are being lost to development, agriculture, and invasive species, requiring urgent conservation efforts; and
WHEREAS, HER is requesting funds to cover gardening tools, outdoor gear, and office materials to ensure continuous community outreach initiatives aimed at fostering conservation and
preservation endeavors for the Keauʻohana State Forest Reserve; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports research, control, and education programs to reduce the negative impact of invasive species on agricultural crops, forests,
and the community; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai‘i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying
the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the Department of Research and Development to provide
a grant to Hawaiʻi Environmental Restoration to support its efforts on restoring and preserving the Keauʻohana State Forest Reserve.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
