Re: Agreement with the University of Hawai`i, Hawai`i Community College
The Hawai`i Fire Department wishes to enter into an agreement with the University of
Hawai`i, Hawai`i Community College. This agreement facilitates the process of
awarding college credit towards the Hawai`i Community College Fire Science Program
to individuals who receive college level learning during training in the County of
Hawai`i, Hawai`i Fire Department.

A. REQUEST:
The Hawaii Fire Department(HFD) seeks Council's permission via an intergovernment resolution to allow
the HFD to enter into a multi-year year agreement with the University of Hawaii, Hawaii Community College
(HCC) Fire Science Program to award college credit toward individuals receiving college-level learning in the
HFD, as well as to facilitate a ride-along program for individuals in the HCC Fire Science program to receive
hands-on learning and application of skills.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
The resolution promotes professional development within the HFD by providing accreditation for the valuable
learning firefighters acquire through their rigorous training, thus enhancing their career prospects and skill
set. Facilitating a ride-along program for students in the Fire Science program fosters practical, real-world
experience crucial for their education and future careers, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Ultimately, this collaboration not only benefits individual firefighters and students but also contributes to the
overall effectiveness and preparedness of the HFD, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community it
serves.
