Aloha,
I am writing in support of resolution #51824 to allow for the acquisition of property to allow for the
reconstruction of lava inundated roads and including the reconstruction of Pohoiki Road.
As all of us living in lower Puna are aware, Pohoiki Road is the main arterial road in Puna Makai,'providing
direct access to the shoreline between Kalapana and Kapoho, particularly the area around Isaac Hale
Beach Park.
With its reconstruction, Pohoiki Road will save 30 minutes drive-time and allow residents of that area
easier access to Pahoa and beyond.
Without Pohoiki being utilized,fishermen will have to bring their boats to either Kalapana or Kapoho
(once 137 is fully restored)—a significant increase in travel time on a road (137)that was not built for
wide loads.
Pohoiki Road needs to be fully restored to allow for safe access for fishermen and other emergency
vehicles.
