With 70%greater population density than the least(Waiahino)for Kalapana to be open only one day a week is absurd. Certainly the numbers are there to be open 2 days. The recycle bins that were there before were heavily used. Now,there are none. To have one rubbish truck pick up once or twice a week is far more efficient than 1400 cars traversing to Kalapana Transfer to dump their rubbish. Much like the roadway matinence is covered by a portion of our property taxes, the transfer station services should also be included in property taxes. I'm not sure that we can encourage the public to go "green",when we as a county cannot provide basic services to the communities. Isn't the census to provide numbers to the federal government for funding of programs? It's almost as if we take 2 steps forward and then 1 1/2 back. I personally think we can do better. We could go as far as providing 1/2/3/4 recycle cans to individual addresses complete with lids and wheels, color coded for the specific recyclable materials, and have scheduled pick up by county workers or independent contractors, charging a minimal fee for the service. If we all work together for the good of Hawaii, how could we possibly go wrong? Mahalo, Lesa Callahan General Delivery Pahoa, HI 96778 : LCallahan e r— Comm. N . . Ref. To: Ref. Date JUN - 4 2024 1
