Aloha Council,
Please consider this testimony in favor,of Bill 140-24, which will provide additional service days at the
Kalapana Transfer Station. The reduced amount of days the transfer station is a health issue for our
Kalapana community.
As Puna is the largest growing district in the State of Hawai'i, we require basic infrastructure to be
available for our community. This includes availability of the transfer station in Kalapana, which is
currently only one (1) day a week.
The amount of trash left outside the gates, and the surrounding area is astounding. (*See pictures
below) Additionally, due to the transfer station being available one day a week, people are dumping
trash along the road side, and into vacant lots.
As stated in the below Population Density chart, Kalapana has a much larger population than
Honomu, Puako, Waiahino, and other areas in Hawai'i island. The imbalance in services provided is
clear, and requires review.
In closing, our Kalapana community in Puna needs to have the transfer station open three (3) days a
week, as other .
