Re: Provide Funds to Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization
The Hawaii Fire Department wishes to provide $33,200 to Hawaii Wildfire
Management Organization (HWMO), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. This grant will
be used towards Phase 1 of the "Community Fuels Reduction and Defensible Space"
project.
Enclosed is a resolution authorizing the Hawaii Fire Department to provide $33,200 to
HWMO, pursuant to Hawaii County Code (2016 Edition as amended) Chapter 2, Article
25, Section 2-139(a)(3)(A).

A. REQUEST:
Pursuant to the Hawaii County Code Section 2-139(a)(3)(A), Council approval is requested for a
grant award of $33,200 to Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO), a 501(c)(3)
organization.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
The Hawai'i Fire Department (Hl"D) recognizes the importance of reducing wildfire risk,and
enhancing community safety through proactive hazard mitigation measures; and the Community
Fuels Reduction and Defensible Space project is designed to mitigate fire hazards by facilitating
voluntary compliance from property owners, ensuring environmentally sound vegetation removal,
and coordinating necessary permits and compliance with local and federal regulations; and the
total cost for Phase 1 of the Community Fuels Reduction and Defensible Space project is estimated
at $43,575, with $33,200 in federal funds provided through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program
(HMGP) and $10,375 in matching funds contributed as in -kind donations; and HWMO has
demonstrated expertise and commitment to wildfire mitigation and community safety, making it a
suitable recipient for this subgrant to implement Phase 1 of the project.
