When I first purchased my property on AM Drive, I envisioned a place where families and t'x-f
friends could come together to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of our island. My home, with its
multiple bedrooms, was designed specifically to accommodate larger groups, allowing them to
experience the unique charm of Hawaii.
Over the years, I have welcomed numerous guests, many of whom return year after year,
bringing their extended families to create lasting memories. However, I am deeply concerned
about the recent changes proposed in Hill 121, particularly the amendments that set a maximum
renter limit.
The limit, as currently proposed, does not reflect the true capacity of my home, which is
equipped to safely and comfortably host larger groups. The original provision allowing for
planning director discretion was vital in accommodating the diverse nature of properties like
mine. This flexibility ensured that each property could be assessed based on its individual
characteristics and capabilities.
The Leeward Planning Commission recognized the importance of this flexibility by supporting
the planning director's recommendation for a more tailored approach to renter calculations.
Such a balanced method ensures safety without imposing unnecessary restrictions on homeowners.
kindly urge the council to reinstate the provision for planning director discretion in Bill 121. This will
allow properties like mine to continue offering a welcoming space for larger groups, maintaining the
spirit of hospitality that makes our community so special.
