Aloha Chairperson Kimball,
As a fully disabled resident of the island of Hawai'i, I am reaching out to express my deep
concerns regarding Bill 121, My opposition stems from the absence of a comprehensive,
independent, and academically rigorous economic impact study to fully understand the
bill's implications on our local economy.
The vacation rental industry is a significant contributor to the Big Island's economy, with
an impact exceeding $1.1 billion. It is, therefore, imprudent to regulate such a vital sector
without a thorough analysis of how proposed changes might affect not only the industry
but also the broader community, including residents like myself who rely on a stable and
flourishing local economy for our well-being.
During the extensive Leeward Planning Commission meeting, which you attended, the
commitment was made to conduct this necessary study. This acknowledgment
underscores the complexity and potential consequences of Bill 121, highlighting the need
for careful consideration and analysis before any further action is taken.
Given the bill's far-reaching implications, I urge you to advocate for sending Bill 121 back
with the recommendation to undertake the proposed economic impact study.
Furthermore, it is crucial to involve industry representatives in the discussion to ensure a
balanced and comprehensive understanding of the bill's potential effects. The current lack
of industry representation is a significant oversight and a source of considerable concern
