l am urging PCPLUD to pause Bill 121 and to accept anew proposed resoLution requesting the
Department of Research and Development to procure a comprehensive study on the economic and
fiscal impacts of the short-term rental industry in the county.
I have built a career running meaningful short term rentals which have enabled me to stay in Kohala
working for small businesses vs. corporate hotel chain By meaningful I mean short term rentals on
agricultural properties that provide food to the local community. How can anyone afford to farm now in
Kohala without some kind of other income like short term rentals or events? The answer is you cannot. I
have met so many locals and tourists alike who have been inspired to stay on properties that grow food
and farm. We have taught many guests about composting, canoe crops and more. My job is more than
just hosting guests - it's also about agriculture, culture and connecting people with the `aina. Also we
employ all local people for help on the properties and keep money flowing throughout our small
community. This is very important to our small towns in Kapaau and Hawi.
Please let me know this was recorded and will be reviewed by the appropriate people.
