Subject: Opposing Bill 121, 122 & 123
For the thousands of people that rent out a portion of their own property in ordrar
make ends meet, these bills reduce their supplemental income by adding morevfees,
fines and taxes. Many residents will stop hosting short term rentals as the regulations
will become too cumbersome and expensive to bear. The whole tourism industry will
suffer as it not only affects the property owners; there will be less work for cleaning
services, chefs, caterers, etc... County and state tax revenue will also decline with the
lack of these rentals.
The hotel industry stands to gain with visitors having less accommodation choices. They
will have no choice but to pay the very high room rates that have increased so much in
the past few years. Many visitors will turn away from Hawaii as a destination as they will
choose to spend their vacation money in other spots where their money goes further.
I ask that before this bill becomes law that you pay close attention to the $300k Maui
study that is being undertaken on this same subject. You may want to commission a
study for Hawaii island as our needs are not quite the same as Maui County's needs.
Please do not cut out the little guys in the pursuit of making the big kahuna's happy!
