Aloha Chairperson Kimball,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding Hawaii Bill 121 and its potential impacts on cur local
economy, particularly the vacation rental industry. This industry is a significant contributor to the Big
Island, providing more than $1,1 billion in economic impact. Given the magnitude of this contribution,
it is crucial that any regulations imposed on this,industry are based on thorough and academically
rigorous research.
During the Leeward Planning Commission meeting, which lasted over eight hours, you agreed to
conduct a comprehensive, independent study to assess the economic impacts of Bill 121. 1 strongly
support this decision and urge that it be prioritized before any further action is taken on the bill. The
complexity and potential ramifications of this legislation demand a detailed evaluation, which cannot
be rushed.
Furthermore, I believe it is essential to include representatives from the vacation rental industry in the
discussion process. Their absence in the current debate is a significant oversight and contributes to
the public's frustration with the bill. Including industry stakeholders will ensure a more balanced and
informed approach to any changes proposed.
