The vacation rental industry is a significant contributor to the Big Island's economy, providing over $1.1 billion in economic impact. Given the magnitude of this industry, it is crucial that any regulatory changes be made based on a comprehensive, independent, and academically rigorous economic impact study. During the Leeward Planning Commission meeting, you agreed to conduct such a study. This commitment is a step in the right direction, but the current timeline does not allow for a detailed evaluation of this complex and impactful bill. Therefore, I urge the council to send the bill back with a recommendation to conduct the study and re -work the language accordingly. Furthermore, it is essential to include a member of the industry in discussions about the bill. The absence of industry representation has been a significant concern among the public and contributes to the opposition to this bill. Including industry voices will ensure a more balanced and informed approach to regulation. Mahalo for considering these points. I believe that with a more thoughtful and inclusive process, we can achieve regulations that support both the community and the economy.
