This industry is a significant contributor to the Big Island, providing more than $1.1 billion in economic impact. Given the magnitude of this contribution, it is crucial that any regulations imposed on this industry are based on a thorough understanding of r potential effects, During the Leeward Planning Commission meeting, which lasted over eight hours, you agreed to conduct a comprehensive, independent, and academically rigorous economic impact study. This commitment is a step in the right direction, as it acknowledges the complexity and significance of the decisions at hand. However, the current timeline does not allow for a detailed evaluation of Bill 121, which is both complex and impactful. Therefore, I urge you to recommend sending the bill back for further study and refinement. Additionally, it is essential that a member of the vacation rental industry be included in discussions. Their perspective is invaluable in ensuring that any new regulations are fair, effective, and beneficial to all stakeholders. The lack of industry representation has been a major concern among the public, and addressing this issue will help build trust and cooperation between the council and the community. Comm.
