Aloha,
I am writing in opposition to the proposed TARS bill being heard on the floor. I believe the bill restricts
the rights of homeowners and who they choose to share their property with. I believe the current STVR
rules are sufficient and have restricted outside investment allowing the market to be shared by families
that live and work locally. ANY DEEPER RESTRICTIONS&EGISLATION ACTIVELY WORK AGAINST LOCAL
FAMILIES. As we all know this is a tough economic environment and every thing helps. One of the clear
advantages of STVRS is that they infuse money directly into our local economies in the form of restaurant
visits, entertainment venues, support of local farmers markets and craft fairs and rental incomes to local
families living on the big island. The secondary effect is that owner operators then go into their
communities to spend money which further grows our local economy.
I do not believe that stvrs take away rental opportunities from families as most stvrs were never
intended for Longterm rental usage. I believe the council should amend huge parts of the building code
to that affordable housing can be built for and by young families. Current code requirements cost
families tens of thousands of dollars more that homes built 20 years ago that drive the cost of living
up. There is clear data (100 year old houses are still standing) that many of the new code requirements
are frivolous and serve no Clear benefit to families that need to stay dry and warm.
