Opposition to Bill 166
Dear City Council,
Regarding Bill 166, Kaloko Development, I strongly oppose the further development of Kaloko Mauka.
We have resided in Kaloko for more than 20 years. Kaloko mauka was ONCE a bird sanctuary. According
to b psa/bir finding.info/hawaii-kaloko-mauW is past its glory since it has been developed. Hope
remains that the Hawaii Akepa may return but not if development continues in this ahupua'a.This is
because of the tendency of developers to clear native Hawaiian forest. The native ohia,'ie'ie, and
especially hapu'u (the mother of the forest) are stripped away for "gentlemen ranches". These forests are
essential to preserve for future generations. It is our responsibility to be stewards of this unique cloud
forest.
Kaloko Mauka is also a watershed,for Kailua Kona. Development and clearing of the natural forest may
result in our ability for clean water in the future. Have we not learned lessons from Oahu and Maui?
This is an important decision NOW to take action - ho okuleana - take responsibility to preserve what is
important for our future generations. If you approve this development - we will never have the ability to
conserve and protect this unique and sacred area again. Once it is gone, it is gone and it will be on you.
Please, oppose Bill 166.
