Subject: Support for Bill 556
;
To our Hawai'i County Council,
My husband and I are writing in full support of Bill 556.
As owners of a hosted rental, The Last Resort, we not only pay tens of thousands each year in property
taxes, TAT, GET and HCTAT, but we also support our rural economy in a variety of other ways. For
example:
• During the massive renovation of our property, we put nearly $1 M into the pockets of local Kohala
carpenters and tradesmen, and an additional $1 M into small businesses, like Jedi Painting
Companyand Aikane Landscaping, who helped restore our'aina and homes.
Each month we provide affordable housing on -site for our property managers as well as pay
them—$6,000/mo in wages.
• We rely on local independent contractors and small businesses to maintain our property -from
gutter cleaning to lawn mowing. Our annual budget for these vendors is $35,000.
• On top of that, we've enabled our Wahine -owned cleaning company to grow its workforce as we
pay them over $30,000/year for guest cleanings,
• We guide our guests to local restaurants, farmers markets, boutiques and excursion vendors -so
that they can dine, shop and explore using Kohala small businesses. Without this tourism, places
like downtown Haw! couldn't survive.
We hope you will pass Bill 556 and conduct an economic study that looks comprehensively at the
positive economic impacts STRs have around the entire island.
Respectfully,
Anna Ruth & Joe Peiffer
