I support resolutions 562-24 and 574.24.
The project to replace the broken chargers is long overdue. Public charging infrastructure is a critical
step towards a sustainable and resilient island. It is also important that the county serve as a leader
in commitment to increasing the use of renewable energy rather than fossil fuels for our
transportation sector. We are making great progress in utilizing renewable energy for our grid but
remain almost entirely dependent on fossil fuels for the transportation sector. Reliable public
charging will serve as one more incentive to our community that one can drive anywhere on our
island without fear of running out of fuel.
The project to procure the EVs is also long overdue. The County has a commitment to electrify its
fleet, but little has been done beyond the first five plug-in hybrids over a decade ago. This project will
allow for the deployment of EVs and a shared vehicle model for the County. It is essential that the
County lead the change by being the example, to take more aggressive steps to reduce
transportation emissions and pollution, and to take steps to enable the county to meet its
commitments to a clean energy future.
This is one more opportunity for the Council to demonstrate leadership through example
