Pries Subject: Concern for Tire ~'rotection for the Kailua Fire District (District 7) To All Concerned, It is my understanding that the request for an adequate fire engine to protect our district has been denied in the form of a budget veto by our present Mayor. Although this was very unfortunate, it is also my understanding that you, the Hawaii County Council, can override his veto. Please understand that this is crucial for the protection of our families and ourselves. The current fire engine and other equipment that we are using is in noway close to sufficient. This constitutes the endangerment of my children; I take this very personally, as should sll of you! Our main-line fire truck, which we have had little"use of this year, has failed recent annual pump testsand is about 7 years older then~tlPe-natianal standard of 10 years of service. It has also been plagued with many other probitms, which is why it has been ofT line for so -long now. 'I('lie back-up engines/trucks are also inadequate. For example, the present one that we are using has a maximum speed of 25 MPH traveling up Palani Rd. (Hwy. 190) and takes a much too long to reach that speed. ft fairs only slightly better on a Rxt grade. This is dangerous far all of the people that live otf of Hwy. 190 and anywhere else out of Kailua town. Please override the Mayor's veto and pravide us with an adequate fire engine. Thank you very much for considering my request. SinSj-incerely, _ G. Joe Pries (Firefighter Kailua Station) Copy N0. 6 83.03 FYIe N~o. cc: Station File ~f' 1O ~ G 1 Ref. Date.. ~ ~
