JMt-4 Oi 14 <br />��• • ice- �4 <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII •_ STATE OF HAWAII <br />r•��1 two'; �•�� <br />OF <br />RESOLUTION NO. 653 24 <br />A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br />AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br />DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO ALANUI `O KA`U FOR <br />ITS RARE AND ENDANGERED NATIVE PLANT EDUCATION PROJECT. <br />WHEREAS, Alanui `O Ka`u is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves Hawaii <br />Island by fostering an appreciation of the history of Ka`u, improving the economic vitality <br />through community -based projects, planning and education, and serving the needs of the <br />community through enrichment programs and projects that promote well-being, health, safety, <br />art, and culture; and <br />WHEREAS, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), <br />nearly 90 percent of Hawai`i's native plants are found nowhere else in the world, and Hawaii is <br />often referred to as the "endangered species capital of the world" with 366 of the Hawaiian plant <br />taxa listed by Federal and State agencies as endangered or threatened and another 48 species <br />proposed as endangered; and <br />WHEREAS, Ka`u is home to an amazing variety of native plants, and Alanui `O Ka`u <br />actively works in partnership with DLNR to help prevent the extinction of native plants and <br />provide for their recovery through integrated, on -site propagation at the Na`ohulelua Historical <br />Garden in Na`alehu; and <br />WHEREAS, Alanui `O Ka`u would like to conduct classes and tours at the Na`ohulelua <br />Historical Garden to provide education and information to the community about rare, <br />endangered, and endemic Hawaiian plants; and <br />WHEREAS, Alanui `O Ka`u is requesting funds to assist with expenses for creating and <br />printing class materials, rental of grading and compacting equipment, and to purchase meals for <br />volunteers, soil, plants, mulch, and other garden supplies for this project; and <br />WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports the development of <br />a robust, diversified agricultural sector to achieve sustainability; and <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code, <br />Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br />resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, <br />service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that <br />Contingency Relief funds from Council District 6 will be appropriated to the Department of <br />Research and Development to provide a grant to Alanui `O Ka`u for its Rare and Endangered <br />Native Plant Education Project. <br />
