VETERANS CEMETERY DEVELOPMENT & EXPANSION ASSOCIATION FOR EXPENSES RELATING TO THE PERMANENT CAMP TARAWA DISPLAY AT ELLISON ONIZUKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.
WHEREAS, the West Hawaiʻi Veterans Cemetery Development & Expansion Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to expand its Memorial Walkway, improve landscaping,
enhance reforestation efforts of the adjacent Dry Forest, and support the general betterment of the West Hawai'i Veterans Cemetery and to enlist the support of government, public, veteran,
and civic minded volunteers; and
WHEREAS, the West Hawaiʻi Veterans Cemetery Development & Expansion Association is collaborating with the Department of Public Works to construct a permanent Camp Tarawa display case
at Ellison Onizuka International Airport; and
WHEREAS, Camp Tarawa was a training camp located between Mauna Kea and Kohala mountains that was constructed and used by the 2nd Marine Division during World War II; and
WHEREAS, the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport has approved the display and identified the Gate 11 waiting area as its suitable location; and
WHEREAS, the West Hawaiʻi Veterans Cemetery Development & Expansion Association is requesting funds for construction the Camp Tarawa display case at Ellison Onizuka International Airport;
and
WHEREAS, the Department of Liquor Control supports programs that provide community projects in a drug- and alcohol-free environment such as the permanent Camp Tarawa exhibit at Ellison
Onizuka Kona International Airport; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawai‘i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying
the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 will be appropriated to the Department of Liquor Control to provide a grant
to the West Hawaiʻi Veterans Cemetery Development & Expansion Association for expenses relating to the permanent Camp Tarawa exhibit at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
