Dear County Council,
I cannot make the meeting in person or via zoom and would like to communicate my situation.
I understand the need for affordable housing and limits on transient rentals. I also believe there are numerous
differences in individual situations. For instance, if someone bought up a bunch of condos, never lived in them, and only
used them to make money through services like Air BnB (with no personal connection to Hawaii) I'd agree that situation
is harmful and such uses should be limited. But many people, such as myself, are using transient housing out of necessity.
My mother lived in her home in Orchidland for over 25 years. I moved in almost 5 years ago to care for her until she
passed. I am now transitioning to move back to the mainland as that's where my immediate family is, but I plan on living
in Hawaii a few months out of the year and possibly retiring there. Even if I wanted to sell my mother's property (which I
don't), it would take many months, not only because I have to go through all her belongings and decide what to do with
them, two of my friends live in an ohana on the property and manage the property while I'm away. They would have to
find a new place to live. In addition, it's a small homestead, so I would have to relocate our animals as well. So, even if I
did want to sell it, displacing my friends and animals, I'd need money to care for the property while this process was
happening.
Over the past 10 years I've spent at least 2 months every year (and most of the past 5 years) in Hawaii caring for my
mother and her place I have a great love of the land and its people. I belong to and volunteer for a local church,
volunteer at a local community garden, donate to Hawaiian causes, and participate in educatLg64rAnFJ6pmmunity

events. When I'm there, I'm truly living there, and I would like to keep the property in my family so that my brothers,
cousins, nieces, and nephews may use it over the years. But I can't hold onto it unless it provides some upkeep income
via short term rentals, and if it were traditionally / permanently rented out, my family wouldn't be able to use it, which
would defeat the whole purpose.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I understand this is a complex issue.
