RESOLUTION NO. 683 24
A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE MARINE
MAMMAL CENTER FOR ITS MARINE SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION
PROGRAMS WITH KE KAI OLA.
WHEREAS, Marine Mammal Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was
created to rehabilitate and release injured, ill, or abandoned marine mammals, and to advance
ocean health through its work in marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, research, and education;
and
WHEREAS, Ke Kai Ola is a marine mammal hospital and education facility operated by
the Marine Mammal Center, whose primary mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and release
Hawaiian monk seals and provide medical care, veterinary treatment and a safe space for sick,
injured or malnourished monk seals to recover; and
WHEREAS, Ke Kai Ola is partnering with Kealakehe High School from October
through December 2024, to provide work -based marine science and conservation education, that
focuses on Hawaiian monk seal conservation; and
WHEREAS, the Marine Mammal Center is requesting funds to assist with expenses for
materials, supplies, and costs such as orientation packets, travel to and from Kealakehe High
School, Ke Kai Ola, and on -island field trip locations, snacks and refreshments; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Liquor Control supports programs and activities that
promote education and well-being in a drug -free and alcohol -free environment, such the Marine
Mammal Center's marine science and conservation programs.
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code,
Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via
resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event,
activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that
Contingency Relief funds from Council District 8 will be appropriated to the Department of
Liquor Control to provide a grant to the Marine Mammal Center to assist with expenses for its
marine science and conservation programs with Ke Kai Ola.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii hereby
transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Director of Liquor Control and Director of Finance, and that the Director of
Finance is hereby authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the terms of this
resolution.
