TIME-SHARE PROJECT AT WAIKOLOA
As requested through a telephone conversation with one of your staff members, the following are the
results of a study to determine the approximate consumption for time-share projects in Waikoloa and
its comparison to consumption for a typical single-family dwelling in the same area. Inasmuch as
water systems in the Waikoloa area are all privately owned and data not being available, the
Department chose to do the study on time-share projects in the Kailua-Kona area, which has similar
rainfall and climatic conditions.
The two time-share projects selected included the Worldmark Club (Tax Map Key 7-5-019:046) in
Kailua and the Mauna Loa Village by the Sea (Tax Map Key 7-8-010:058) in Keauhou. These are
typical time-share projects with amenities for vacationers except a golf course.
The World Mark Club in Kailua-Kona, consisting of 64 units, has a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and
irrigation. Its daily maximum usage is 43 units at 600 gallons per day (gpd) or 25,800 gpd. The
Mauna Loa Village in Keauhou, consisting of 141 units, has 8 swimming pools, 8 Jacuzzis, ponds, and
irrigation. Its maximum daily usage is 87 units or 52,200 gpd. Based on these two projects, average
daily maximum usage is 380 gpd per time-share unit.
In comparison, the maximum daily usage for a residential dwelling in the Waikoloa area is about
1,000-1,200 gpd, including irrigation demands; whereas, a similar home in East Hawaii is about
600 gpd. Therefore, the water usage for atime-share unit, excluding any golf course demands, is less
than the demand for single-family residences.
