ANIMAL SANCTUARY TO SUPPORT ITS HONEY BEE EDUCATION PROGRAM.
WHEREAS, Bird and Bee Hawaiʻi Animal Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals and honey bees through protection, rehabilitation, and education,
fostering a harmonious coexistence on Hawai‘i Island; and
WHEREAS, honey bees are vital to Hawaiʻi’s environment and agricultural systems, playing a crucial role in pollination and contributing to the sustainability of local ecosystems and
food production; and
WHEREAS, the Honey Bee Education program informs and educates Hawaiʻi Island residents about the importance of honey bees, promoting awareness and advocacy for pollinator protection
through accessible and engaging educational efforts; and
WHEREAS, from January to June 2025, the program will host informational pop-ups at local farmers’ markets, deliver community presentations, and offer virtual classes, reaching diverse
audiences to encourage sustainable beekeeping and support local agriculture; and
WHEREAS, Bird and Bee Hawaiʻi Animal Sanctuary is seeking funds for honey samplings, the production and distribution of educational brochures, rental fees for space at local farmers’
markets, and subscription costs for an online conferencing platform (Zoom); and
WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports sustainable agricultural practices that increase consumption of local agricultural and value-added products by expanding
marketing and education at the local, national, or international levels; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawai‘i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying
the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the Department of Research and Development to provide
a grant to Bird and Bee Hawaiʻi Animal Sanctuary to support its Honey Bee Education program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
