Having lived in Hawaii since 1989 and being in the construction and real estate
development business since 2003, I have had extensive experience working with many
Planning Directors and staff on multiple Hawaiian Islands.
In 2015 I permanently relocated to the Big Island. Since then, I have proposed and
worked on workforce housing projects and processed subdivisions and plan approval
applications within several zoning districts. Jeff Darrow has been involved in reviewing and
managing many of the projects I have presented. Although Jeff has not supported all my
proposed projects due to general plan or other planning concerns, he has always made
himself available in a timely manner, which is rare in my experience on several islands. Jeff
responds with clear communication and direction, backing up his opinions and discretion
with code references, policies, and his vast experience working in the county.
Jeff supports workforce housing and suggests creative ways to move such projects
forward when they get stuck. He gets involved, he responds, he does not take sides, he is
loyal to the county and the residents of Hawaii Island. I have observed a work ethic in Jeff
that I have rarely seen in or out of county government. Given our shortage of housing, it is
crucial that a seasoned professional like Jeff is kept on to maintain momentum and provide
quality leadership within the Planning Department.
