Your Committee on Governmental Operations and External Affairs, to which was referred
Communication No. 89, reports as follows:
Communication No. 89, transmitted by Mayor C. Kimo Alameda, dated January 2, 2025,
requests the Council's review and confirmation of Greg Yamada to the Police Commission.
Executive Assistant to the Mayor Micah Alameda was present in the Kona Chambers to
introduce Mr. Yamada, who was also present in the Kona Chambers, to the Committee.
Mr. Yamada was formerly a Police Officer, and both he and Mr. Alameda shared how important
it is to have someone with direct experience serve on this Commission.
Committee Member Dennis "Fresh" Onishi requested that the Mayor's Office notify the Council
Member for that district regarding fixture nominations from their districts prior to Council
meetings.
Committee Members Ashley Kierkiewicz and Michelle Galimba spoke in favor of the
appointment.
Pursuant to Article VII, Chapter 2, Section 7-2.2 of the Hawaii County Charter, members of the
Police Commission shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council.
Your Committee on Governmental Operations and External Affairs is in accord with the purpose
and intent of Communication No. 89, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of
Greg Yamada to the Police Commission.
