Aloha Council
This testimony is in appreciation to the council for
consideration of our funding request.
In order to express the value of funding skateparks in
rural communities it is with great pride that we detail
some of the partnerships
and results of those affiliations.
Once the initial skatepark was created in Kapa'au our
board members joined with the Kohala Coalition against
Drugs to assist with community education and efforts to
curb drug use and dependence.
This partnership helped the group to reach the youth
sector and create new relationships within the
community.
Another partnership was formed with Halaula middle
afterschool programs and implemented the Create a
Skate, education and recreation focused module. This
program focused on the academic aspects of not only
buildin•g a skateboard but also the benefits of the physical
activity.
Largely underserved communities such as •North Kohala
have been lacking in youth based recreation facilities that
appeal to youth at risk.
Our board members and volunteer coaches have created
irls clubs that are inclusive, exciting-,
and focused on growth and a healthy lifestyle. Facilities

that may provide a healthy distraction from substance
abuse, domestic violence, and teen pregnancy. A much
needed diversion from electronic devices and an
opportunity to create social interaction with all ages and
ethnic backgrounds.
Roots Skatepark has become a hub for creativity. The
park brings in visitors from every region of the island, the
state, and is now a world class destination.
The growing facility adds significant impact to the
commerce, youth recreation, and supplements the
positive mental health of this rural community.
We thank you for helping to fund an organization that is
dedicated to building not only a better skatepark but als*
adding significant value to the lives of residents and
visitors alike.
