Subject: Support for the Hualalai Court Workforce Housing Project
Aloha Council Member Kagiwada,
I am writing in support of the Hualalai Court Affordable Workforce Housing application to build
104 apartments in your district.
Being born and raised in Hawai'i has made me see the true beauty of the land and what it
means to be Hawaiian. I've also witnessed the struggle of almost every local and/or their family
trying to secure affordable housing. Beyond paradise and how Hawai'i is perceived as,
hundreds, if not thousands of locals face housing challenges and live paycheck to paycheck.
Sustainable housing isn't just a necessity; it's the key to fostering a stronger and more resilient
community.
The misconception that affordable housing negatively impacts the community and those around
it isn't entirely true. By debunking these false perceptions, we can recognize that it's not a threat
but an investment in the potential of our future generations. It can foster a sense of belonging
and serves as a gateway for a solid living foundation. When families have access to secure and
reasonably priced homes, it reduces factors that can lead to negative outcomes. The purpose
of this project is about creating environments where children can focus on education and
individuals can work without fear of financial insufficiency. This will allow us to keep families
together making it possible to preserve our traditions, stories, and the mana (spirit) that makes
Hawai'i what it is. Without affordable options, our youth and future generations after that will be
forced to leave, diminishing what defines our community and its authenticity.
Affordable housing isn't just about a roof over our heads; it's about creating opportunities. As a
young person with dreams and ambition, having access to affordable housing would mean a
chance to pursue education and career paths without the burden of unattainable living costs. It's
not just an economic necessity but a cultural imperative.
