Subject: Support for Hualalai Court Workforce Housing Project
Aloha Councilmember Kagiwada,
I am writing in support of the Hualalai Court Workforce Housing 201H application to build 104
affordable apartments in your district.
Allen Kai Van Bergen is my name, and I'm a proud native of Hawaii. I have a great
affection and respect for Hawaii's culture, customs, and distinctive way of life because of my
upbringing in this beautiful state. Even though I treasure my house, it has become more and
more difficult, particularly for someone in my age range, to build a secure and sustainable life in
Hawaii due to the state's financial difficulties. The goal of going back to our home is often
hindered for many young adults, including me, by the scarcity of employment possibilities and
the high expense of living. I feel lucky to be able to move back home with my parents, but
unfortunately, many of my friends who are in similar circumstances are not as fortunate. The
imminent possibility of being forced to relocate because of financial difficulties for young adults,
gifted people who are the heartbeat of our community in addition to severing ties with our
cultural heritage. For people like me and countless others who long to return to Hawaii, this
proposed affordable housing project provides a glimpse of hope. The project will not only meet
the urgent demand for shelter by offering inexpensive housing options, but it will also serve as a
catalyst for local economic growth. The project's employment prospects will boost the local
economy, give residents work options, and promote stability and pride in the community.
Moreover, this project is especially important for Hawaii's indigenous population, who often
struggle to make ends meet. Our people's ability to stay connected to their roots and maintain
the diverse collection of traditions that make Hawaii so remarkable is made possible by cheap
housing. Our distinct cultural identity is deeply interconnected with the Island.
