Aloha Chair, Vice Chair, and Members of the County Council,
This is a comment on the nomination of Wesley Segawa as Director of the Department of Environmental
Management.
It appears that Mr. Segawa meets the qualifications for the position to which he has been nominated.
However, while he possesses the necessary credentials, there seems to be a lack of forward -thinking
and innovative solutions in his approach to addressing the environmental challenges facing this county.
Additionally, his past ethical judgment has raised concerns, with some instances having been
highlighted in the media. I hope we are not appointing him by default, but rather after careful
consideration of whether he truly aligns with the needs of the people of Hawai'i Island and the land
herself.
