Subject: Oppose Wesley Segawa as Director of Environmental Management
Aloha members of the County Council,
Mahato for this opportunity to oppose the proposed appointment of Wesley Segawa to the position of
Director of Environmental Management.
We need a director with integrity who has a history of being honest and ethical. On December 27, 2004,
Mr. Segawa entered a plea of No Contest for using a false name and money laundering.(,) Per Wikipedia
citations, No Contest avoids pleading Guilty, is used in plea bargaining, and carries the same immediate
penalties of a guilty plea. Mr. Segawa's No Contest admission was for a Class C Felony. Money
Laundering is neither honest nor ethical.
We need a director who has the background and experience in the area s/he is leading, with no conflicts
of interest with any department of the County. Mr. Segawa's experience is in construction, with his self -
named company currently holding a $4.4 million business contract with the County. He stated he was
"unsure" whether his company had any County contracts, as his position is involved with "risk
management." How can someone assess risk management for projects he claims he is unaware of?
We need a director who is confident in his/her current knowledge and awareness of the issues facing our
county's wastewater treatment plants, solid waste, recycling, and other day to day environmental issues.
At his first committee -level hearing, Mr. Segawa's responses repeatedly demonstrated he was unaware
of our County's history, and our ongoing acute and long-term challenges.
The word "integrity" was frequently used in the Council's hearings, and by Mayor Alameda. Even if the
Mayor's statement that "integrity is hard to find," is true, please use your No vote to tell him to keep
searching.
