Aloha,
My name is Deborah Michiko Fried and I work for HOPE Services Hawaii. I am writing in my personal
capacity in support of Resolution 46-25, which would approve the award of Round 3 funds to
nonprofit organizations addressing housing and homelessness on Hawai'i Island.
This resolution is important because it allows organizations who work tirelessly to improve the plight
of homelessness in our community to keep doing that critical work.
As a resident of Hawaii and a healthcare professional, my efforts and those I suport in addressing
homelessness are aimed at improving the health, safety, and quality of life for all in our community.
Our actions reflect our humanity, our ethics, and our respect for each other as unique individuals
trying to make our way as best we can in a world that at any given moment can be fraught with
struggle and suffering. A fundamental need is a secure place that is ours, where we can rest, heal,
belong, and plan for what comes next in life.
Programs like the emergency and supportive housing provided by HOPE Services can help, but only
if they receive adequate funding in a timely manner. Delaying funding could mean a lapse in services,
with more people suffering on the streets when they could be on the path to permanent housing
instead.
With the volatility of federal funding due to the President's executive orders, it's more important than
ever that our most vulnerable community members can rely on local leaders.
I strongly advocate for the passage of this resolution to fund effective homelessness and housing
programs such as those provided by HOPE Services Hawai'i.
