Aloha kakou,
I am writing in strong support of Resolution 46-25, which would approve the award of
Round 3 funds to nonprofit organizations addressing housing and homelessness on
Hawaii Island. This resolution is crucial because it allows organizations that are actively
making a difference in our community to continue their vital work without disruption.
As a Native Hawaiian who grew up in Puna, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating
effects of gentrification, economic instability, and lack of affordable housing, all of which
have contributed to the rising rates of homelessness in our community. Our local
nonprofits, such as Neighborhood Place of Puna, have stepped up to address these
challenges by providing essential services that help individuals and families find stable
housing, access critical resources, and ultimately regain their independence. However,
these programs cannot function without the necessary funding.
Delays in funding approval create significant disruptions in services, putting our most
vulnerable community members at further risk. Without immediate action, programs that
provide emergency shelter, rental assistance, and housing support could be forced to
scale back or even shut down. This means more families sleeping in cars, more kupuna
without safe shelter, and more keiki experiencing housing instability — outcomes that
are entirely preventable if funding is allocated swiftly.
Additionally, with federal funding becoming increasingly uncertain due to the President's
executive orders, it is more important than ever that we ensure our local organizations
have the resources they need. We cannot afford to gamble with the lives of those who
depend on these programs. Every day that funding is delayed is another day that
people remain on the streets, unable to access the help they desperately need.
The time to act is now. 1 urge you to pass Resolution 46-25 without delay and ensure
that the organizations working tirelessly to combat homelessness on Hawai'i Island can
continue their mission. Our community depends on it.
