JanUary2S. 2025Dear County Council Members,
~'
I am writing to urge you to continue funding the Homelessness and Housing Fund, a vital
resource in addressing our community's housing crisis. The fund plays an essential role in
providing shelter, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing to those in need. As
our County faces increasing economic challenges, the need for stable and accessible housing
solutions has never been greater.
The Homelessness and Housing Fund supports programs that provide not only immediate relief
but also long-term solutions. These initiatives help individuals and families transition from
homelessness to self-sufficiency by offering case management, mental health services, job
tro|nin8, and other critical support. By maintaining this fund, we are investing inthe well-being of
our entire community, reducing the burden on emergency services, hospitals, and the criminal
justice system.
Reducing oreliminating funding for these programs provided bvexpert organizations like Hope
Services Hawai'i and Neighborhood Place of Puna would have devastating consequences.
Without these critical nervicea, more individuals and families will be forced to |iwg on the etraata.
leading to increased public health concerns, economic strain, and social instability. The cost of
homelessness extends far beyond the individuals experiencing it —it impacts the entire
community in terms of public safety, healthcare expenses, and economic productivity.
The Homelessness and Housing Fund represents our county's commitment to humane and
effective solutions. Investing in housing -first approaches has been proven to be more
cost-effective than addressing homelessness through emergency measures alone. By
continuing to support this fund, the county demonstrates fiscal responsibility while upholding the
dignity and well-being of its residents.
| urge you bzprioritize this funding inyour upcoming budget discussions and toreaffirm your
commitment to addressing homelessness with sustainable, long-term solutions. Our community
depends on your leadership and commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to safe and
stable housing.
Thank you for your time and consideration.| appreciate your dedication to serving our
community, and | look forward b»your continued support ofthe Homelessness and Housing
Fund.
