No. 101 Your Committee on Governmental Operations and External Affairs, to which was referred Communication No. 101, reports as follows: Communication No. 101, transmitted by Mayor C. Kimo Alameda, dated January 14, 2025, requests the Council's review and confirmation of Wendy Sue Botelho to the Police Commission. Executive Assistant to the Mayor Micah Alameda was present in the Hilo Chambers to introduce Ms. Botelho, who was also present in the Hilo Chambers, to the Committee. Mr. Alameda gave a detailed introduction, including outlining the responsibilities of the Police Commission and mentioned her extensive history of community service and recognition especially with regards to her involvement with the YMCA. Committee Member Dennis "Fresh" Onishi mentioned that there used to be a Hawaii Police Activities League and it was taken away by prior police leadership and he encouraged Ms. Botelho to see about reinstating it. Committee Members Ashley Kierkiewicz and Holeka Inaba spoke in favor of the appointment. Committee Chair Jenn Kagiwada spoke about the responsibly of the Commissioners in the County Charter to advise the Chief of Police on police -community relations. She encouraged Ms. Botelho to use her skills within community relations to support the police and the immigration community right now to help mitigate concerns stemming from current events at the National level. Pursuant to Article VII, Chapter 2, Section 7-2.2 of the Hawaii County Charter, members of the Police Commission shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council.
