Aloha Council Member Kagiwada,
I am writing in support of the Hualalai Court Affordable Workforce Housing application to build
104 affordable apartments in your district.
My name is Drew Basque. I am a 2/c Cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy. I am
planning to be commissioned as an Ensign in the Coast Guard in May of 2026. I was born and raised
on the Big Island of Hawaii, and I plan to move back home once I am finished with my service. I am
writing this letter in support of this affordable housing project.
The high cost of housing in Hawaii places an overwhelming financial burden on families, making it
increasingly difficult to afford necessities and achieve financial stability. Many families are forced to
allocate a significant portion of their income toward rent or mortgage payments, leaving little room
for savings, education, or healthcare expenses. This housing crisis not only limits opportunities for
homeownership but also contributes to overcrowding and instability, ultimately impacting the well-
being and future of our children.
Very Respectfully,
Drew Basque
