Subject: Support for Res. 51-25, Hualalai Court Workforce Housing Project
Aloha Council Members,
Thank you for your approval to move Resolution 51-25 for Hualalai Court Affordable Workforce
Housing through committee. We appreciate your commitment to finding affordable housing
solutions within our community.
I am writing in support of Res. 51-25 to build 104 affordable apartments in Hilo.
The three basic human rights are food,water, and shelter. Even with minimum wage increases,
the ability for individuals to adequately meet all three remains difficult. You can drive through
any subdivision or side road on the island and see makeshift shelters or cars that people are
resorting to use as places to live.
I felt firsthand and understood the desperation of finding a place to feel protected and safe.
Until I found Habitat for Humanity, my family were one of those people who lived in makeshift
shelters in the form of a canopy and room made out of 2x4s and metal roofing . As a single
mother working a full-time job as a restaurant General Manager, I found it extremely difficult to
find housing that would not take up most of my monthly income and leave enough money left
for other needs. The worst part was forcing my daughter into a living situation that she
shouldn't be in.
Even with the help of housing programs,there are still many people who are going without a
place to comfortably call their own. The development of affordable, clean apartments is crucial
for the wellbeing of our people and future generations. No one should be in the situation to
where they must spend most of their days working 2+jobs,taking time away from their
children, keeping a non-leaking roof over their head and food on the table.
