D 610 1)1( R R ® 5 2025 01/13/2025 Council Member Kagiwada 25 Aupuni Street, Suite 1402 Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Support for Hualalai Court Workforce Housing Project Aloha Councilmember Kagiwada, I am writing in support of the Hualalai Court Affordable Workforce Housing application to build 104 affordable apartments in your district for Hawaii's future. My name is Wyatt Savella and I was born and raised in Kealakekua on the island of Hawaii. I am 21 years old and graduated with a BS in Natural Resources and Environmental Management at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After graduating, I hope to eventually come home and work in a career conserving our natural resources so that it may be utilized for future generations. A limiting factor, however, to accomplish this goal is the high cost of living. I would hope to be able to buy my own place independently, rather than relying on others to do so. This really does not seem like a possibility anywhere near the future due to the prices. All my life my mother has been living with my grandparents working constantly to someday get her own place, which as you can guess, has not happened. My extended family also lived in that house throughout my time in high school and still do. Cousins close to my age live there and are working, thinking of buying a place but cannot. Additionally as a college student, I have the opportunity to learn about the future goals of my peers. Many want to work and get their own place in Hawaii, the place they grew up, but see this plan as a reality far down the road. With this in mind, Hualalai Court affordable workforce housing would help family, friends, and myself get our start while saving for our own homes in Hawaii.
