We appreciate your commitment to finding affordable housing solutions within our community. My name is Reece Winkel and I was raised in Kealakekua on the Big Island and I am writing in support of the Hualalai Court Affordable Workforce Housing application to build 104 affordable apartments in your district. I believe this housing project is a tremendous opportunity to give housing for people who cannot afford the high price of living in Hawaii. Hawaii is notorious for being expensive and is one of the highest housing markets in the U.S. Going through with the construction of these affordable housing buildings will give an opportunity for young people to live on their own. I, unfortunately, do not live in Hawaii anymore, but it is because of the high cost of living with no solution. My mom and I lived with my grandparents in Hawaii and they decided once my brother graduated high school they wanted to leave Hawaii. This put me and my mom in a tough situation as we still wanted to stay but could not afford the high rent prices. We were forced to leave paradise and more importantly my home as there is no option for affordable housing. I plan to return to Hawaii after I finish college but this is only possible if I can find a place I can afford and these affordable housing options would be perfect.
