RE: Mohouli Street Extension, Informational Meeting

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce supports the construction of the Mohouli Street
extension. This extension has been approved as part of the Hawau County General Plan since
1959, as part of a necessary network of access expansion in the Kaumana area. The record
indicates many levels of community meetings and discussion as well as formal public hearings.
The intent of all roadway projects in the azea is to provide several safe, efficient, alternative
routes to alleviate congestion and open up convenient access from Kaumana to Waiakea,
encouraging traffic dispersal along several corridors including Mohouli, Puainako and
Ponahawai. This is a long-term project with federal, state and county participation and as such
was planned for the future. In order to keep our growth patterns in line with the community
adopted General Plan we support this extension.
As a business organization, we are of course concerned with employment and the movement of
goods and services. We would like to point out that at least 25% of the workforce in the
Kohala resorts resides in East Hawaii. Our goal would be to build a better and safer
transportation route, not force them to relocate to West Hawaii nearer their workplace. They
have chosen to live in East Hawaii, it is their home and they deserve to be able to get to
meaningful employment.
~ This road will serve to unite the island better. We do not agree with those that would separate
our island by instilling disagreement. We celebrate the diversity and encourage more
conversations; we know there aze many points upon which we all agree.
