I am also involved in multiple ways to advocate for the well-being of our island and state-wide community. I am testifying today as a concerned resident. I reside in Holualoa, in the Moku of Kona, where our community has experienced much degradation of our cultural landscape, which has caused extensive environmental damage. Senator Laura Acasio's extensive background and unwavering dedication to the environment and community make her an exemplary candidate to lead the Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity, and Resilience. She has a profound respect for nature, and she actively participated in initiatives such as Protect Kaho'olawe, the Nature Conservancy, and the Pohale Natural Area. Her academic pursuit in geography at the University of Hawaii further solidified her understanding of environmental systems and the importance of sustainable practices. Community Engagement and Leadership Beyond her environmental endeavors, Senator Acasio has been a pillar in the Hawaii Island community. As a public school educator, she emphasized place -based experiential learning, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among her students. Her role as a doula showcased her dedication to community health and well-being, intertwining traditional practices with modern care. Her active participation in the Hilo Democratic Party, notably as the District 2 chair, underscores her leadership and commitment to civic engagement and a more fair and democratic process in our system. Her legislative work reflects a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of ecological health and community resilience.
