Subject: Mohouli Street Extension
Informational Meeting -Thursday, April 13, 2000
5:00 pm, Hilo High School Cafeteria
I am Donald K. Yamada, President of Yamada & Sons, Inc. and I support
construction of the Mohouli Street Extension as presently configured.
This issue has been approved as part of the County General Plan since 1959, as
part of a necessary network of access expansion in the Kaumana area. The record
indicates many levels of community meetings and discussion, formal public
hearings and a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) in 1998.
The intent of all roadway projects in the area is to provide several safe, efficient,
alternative routes to alleviate congestion and open up convenient access from
Kaumana to Waiakea, encourage traffic dispersal along several corridors including
Mohouli, Puainako and Ponahawai. This is a long-term project with federal, state
and county participation and will provide much needed linkage for the growing
population mauka of Komohana Street.
We encourage concerned parties to consult directly with qualified traffic
management specialists and engineers to resolve perceived concerns. Hilo needs
this project and the benefits it will bring.
