Dear Councilwoman Todd:
We appreciate your interest and support in ensuring complete and updated
information to Mohouli Street residents, in addition to the extensive public
process that was completed in 1998.
It is a great opportunity to distinguish the various road improvement projects
that are underway in various stages, namely, Mohouli Street (approved 1998),
Puainako (EIS in process), Ponahawai (in planning stage) and Saddle Road
Phase 1 (MM21-37 -approved 1999). In order to fully explain these
distinctions, we will dedicate an upcoming column of our "Focus on the
Economy" series to these important projects. As you may know, the Saddle
Road is being considered for designation as the state's first "Eco-Highway",
and we look forward to community input during the planning process.
As convenors of the Saddle Road Task Force established in 1993, we strongly
support the Mohouli Street extension as planned. It is an initial safety
conduit between Ainako/Kaumana and the Waiakea section of Hilo. All
three conduits -namely, Puainako, Mohouli and Ponahawai - are planned
for completion prior to or in concert with the Saddle Road realignment in
order to ensure smooth implementation and allay community concerns.
