Aloha Members of City Council
1 am writing in support of Reso. 71-25, the city council supplying supplemental funds for
the Pulama Mauti Ola Hawaiian Language and Cultural event hosted by Ke Kula `O
Nawahiokalani'opu`u.
The first time we attended Pulama Mauli Ola, 13 years ago, we were recent island
transplants, watching our 6-year-old sing and participate in a full `olelo event. The pride
and strength of the older grades' performance gave me chicken skin, the stage shaking with
"hula steps and their oli filling the small gym. Since then, we have watched Pulama Mauli
Ota outgrow the small school gym, moving outside under tents, until now, when it is too
Large for the school's campus. This impressive growth underscores the desire for this event
by the community.
With the move to a larger venue, it is natural to need more financial support. Pulama Mauli
Ola has always been inspiring for how the school community comes together to donate,
contribute and participate. People give so much time, expertise and knowledge to help this
event go smoothly. The school ohana supply a large amount of resources needed for the
food booths, the auction, drinks and snacks, and game prizes. The person power behind
this event is enormous. Teachers go above and beyond; the families show up and work the
booths, run games, and supervise activities.
To keep up with the growth demanded by the popularity of the event and the growth of the
school, any extra financial resources would be greatly appreciated. It is exciting to think
about the future for not only all for these keiki, but for `olelo and the Hawaiian community
at large. Pulama Mauli Ola has deep roots, roots we have witnessed to stay strong through
adversity. With extra funding from the city council, Pulama Mauli Ola not only could grow,
but it would have more potential to fruit and spread seeds of `olelo among the larger
Hawaiian Island community.
